It can also be a great way to meet new people, as you can easily join a group or invite others to play with you. Here are a few suggestions for some good old-fashioned fun on the road:

Bring your Kindle

Okay guys, now for real. Here is the real game changer. While I fully see the point of reading your favourite story in a book and breathe the smell of printed paper - when it comes to backpacking, an e-book is a the real deal. Personally I use Amazon's Kindle - easy to use in all light conditios. It's the perfect travel companion.

Swimwear

Don't
forget to pack your swimsuit for all the swimming and diving opportunities in
Southeast Asia. Consider bringing a rash guard or wetsuit if you plan on doing
a lot of diving. I am not going to share recommendations for this as I assume you won't bring your own wetsuit in your backpack :)

Diving Gear

If you're
planning on doing some diving in Southeast Asia, it's a good idea to bring your
own gear to save money and ensure a comfortable fit. Pack your mask, snorkel,
and fins in your backpack. Even a diver computer fits easily in your backpack.

Snorkels:

Dive Computer:

I can highly recommend the dive computer I am currently using. I bought it and I have never regretted it. It's the Suunto Dive D5 - it's quite expensive, but in my opinion it's something you only buy once, so for me it was worth the price. If you prefer a cheaper beginner option, check out Cressi Leonardo which is a great dive computer with all necessary functions.

Sun
Protection

The sun can
be intense in Southeast Asia, so pack plenty of sun protection. Bring a hat,
sunglasses, and sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Aloe vera gel can also come in
handy for soothing sunburns. Please consider using a reef friendly version like the NEW LAYER creme.

Insect
Repellent

Mosquitoes
and other insects can be a nuisance in Southeast Asia, and some may carry
diseases like dengue fever or malaria. Pack insect repellent with at least 30%
DEET, and consider wearing long sleeves and pants during peak mosquito hours. My personal favourite is Nobite.

Travel
Insurance

While
backpacking in Southeast Asia can be a lot of fun, it's important to be
prepared for unexpected situations.
